Federal Government Freezes Massive Funding for Windy City Transit Initiatives
The national halt on $2.1 billion allocated for Chicago transportation initiatives was announced on the end of the week, as stated by Budget Director the budget director.
Impacted Plans
Included in the initiatives targeted by the budget pause include the Red Line extension, which was planned to begin construction next year and expand public transport to underserved areas in the metropolis.
Additionally, upgrading projects on a number of public transport routes were also paused.
Justification for the Pause
The official wrote on online platforms that the financing was “frozen to ensure funding is not flowing via race-based contracting.”
The statement comes after a comparable action recently involving New York, where Vought said that millions for infrastructure would be paused, including funding for a new subway tunnel under the Hudson River.
Government Closure Context
The move happens as the national stoppage reaches its third consecutive day, with the US Senate planned to hold a vote later in the day.
In spite of the scheduled Senate vote, there is little hope that a agreement is imminent, as opposition lawmakers hold out for a number of medical compromises.
Additional Consequences
Meanwhile, a growing number of government departments and personnel are explicitly blaming the Democratic party for the closure.
The government communication by agencies could be a violation of the Hatch Act, which forbids federal employees from conducting electioneering.
Furloughed government workers at some offices have been told to set automated replies explaining that they are not working because opposition lawmakers initiated a closure.
“The progressive wing has chosen to shut down the United States government in the name of reckless spending and obstructionism,” an official government site reads.
Additionally, warnings over economic damage are not prompting compromise efforts.
A study by a consulting firm said that every week the closure continues will mean a multi-billion dollar blow to the national economy.
